Junior National Judo Championships May 2007

The above competition was held at Hereford Leisure Centre on Sunday 6th May 2007 and was well attended with a larger than usual number of entrants.

Castle Donington/Shepshed Tigers Judo Club was represented in both the primary and junior events.  James Baldwin, age 11, fought in the under 40 kilo Junior category, along with 21 other, mainly older, contestants.  James won his first fight with a throw into a hold-down for Ippon.  In his second fight, despite a long, well fought bout, he lost to Ippon.  He was hoping to fight for bronze in the repecharge, but unfortunately the contestant who beat him did not achieve gold or silver.

Matthew Evans, age 9, fought in the over 35 kilo primary category, along with 11 other contestants.  He lost his first fight to the eventual bronze medallist, despite gaining a Koka to two Wazaris.  Matthew won his second fight by going the distance and winning on points.

BFPJ level 1 Course, General Course & Grading Comes to the National Squad Training Centre Venue at Tamworth

Many judoka will be grateful to 1st Dan Keith Dawson. His is the welcomed appearance as the first aid on the mat to help any judoka unfortunately injured in national and local competitions. In addition, it is his Belgrave Judo club in Tamworth that provides host venue for the National Squad Training. It is therefore not a surprise that Keith felt compelled to promote the club further by promoting an FPJ level 1 course and grading weekend during the first weekend of February this year.

With any new course, there is always the anxiety that despite all the hard work behind the scenes, the numbers fail to turn up on the day. This was not the case at Tamworth and it was due to Keith’s determined effort together with 4th Dan Len Witts support that a superb program was put together.

The attraction of an FPJ level 1 course led by Kodokan 8th Dan Sensei Hosaka together with a general teaching session on the Saturday led by Kodokan 6th Dan Mrs Michiko Whyman and 4th Dan Paul Howard (Nottingham area Technical advisor) together with 4th Dan Jonathan Boswell followed by a Grading competition on the Sunday under the watchful eye of Mr. GR Mealing 7th Dan and Vice President of the British Judo Council, could not help but attract more than 120 judoka from all over the Midlands.

If that was not enough, there was even more help and assistance in many other 5th, 4th and 3rd Dans also attending the course giving assistance? Primaries and juniors were led by 2nd Dan Rob Dawe and 1st Dan Andy Norman.

The level of teaching for a weekend course was therefore at its highest and the enjoyment was obvious to all those who attended.

Overall, 19 judoka passed the FPJ level 1 course. The importance of teaching the teachers was mentioned in the last edition of the Judoka magazine and it is this depth of education and training that makes the BJC so important in UK Judo.

In the Primary group, 12 graded successfully whilst in the Junior section, 26 graded.
The Senior Kyu grade was equally contested with 13 achieving higher Kyu grades. There were 7 Dan gradings, 4 Kyu Senior grades were awarded Shodan, whilst 3 Dan grades were promoted, 2 Shodans were promoted to Nidan, and 1 Nidan was promoted to Sandan

John Harper 3rd Kyu, on behalf of the club did succeed in obtaining a lottery grant for Shepshed branch of the club. I did not think we would be successful, as I am a where of other clubs that had not been successful. I thought we may get a contribution towards the price of new mats, to my amazement we were awarded the full amount, £4823 to enable us to purchase a new mat which arrived on the 10th April.

I would like to thank John for all the hard work he under took to achieve this success and proving me wrong.

Success at Judo Competition

Castle Donington Judo Club gave a fantastic performance at the Nottinghamshire Area Invitational Competition on Sunday 9th October at Ollerton Sports Centre.
The club was represented only in the primary competition, by James Baldwin (aged 9) Nicholas Evans (aged 9) and Matthew Evans (aged 8).

James fought first in a large pool in the under 30kg category.  The pool was split into two groups.  James won all his fights in his group to finish top.  He then fought for the gold/silver position against the winner of the other pool.  James was victorious and gained a Gold medal.  He won all his five fights; three with Ippon and the last two on points.

Matthew was next to fight in the under 35kg category, again in a large pool of competitors.  Despite being one of the youngest and lightest competitors in the category, he gave a good display.  Matthew lost his first two fights, but since one fight was against the eventual finalist he was given a third fight.  He gained two koka, but finished off the fight with Ippon from a throw into a hold-down.

Nicholas, in the over 35kg category, was last to fight.   He had a tough first fight and lost to the eventual winner of the category.  But he won his next two fights with Ippon to gain the Silver Medal.
Len Witts (3rd Dan), Senior Club coach, congratulated all three boys on an excellent display of Ippon Judo in a well attended competition.

Bognor Regis National Summer School

Andy Norman gained his 1st Dan as well as his FPJ 1 & FPJ 2 Coaching awards, despite a broken toe received whilst practicing with his own coach Len Witts 3rd Dan. Andy travelled  with Len And Robert Dawe 1st Dan to the British Judo Council National Summer School at Bognor Regis.

As a result of the broken toe it was in doubt if  Andy would be up to taking part in the grading , however he over came the discomfort  and went out to achieve his Dan Grade in spectacular style, beating his first opponent who was at least five stone heavier in weight, with a perfect throw to score Ippon.

Robert Dawe presented himself as an assistant coach during the course and received praise for teaching Ippon judo.

National Grade & Veteran Judo Tournament 2004

Two members of Castle Donington/Shepshed Tigers Judo Club achieved success at the National Grade & Veteran Tournament, which was attended by competitors from various parts of the country.

The first to take a Bronze medal in the Ladies 3rd Kyu  (Green Belt) was Sheila Ilaria again putting up a first class performance, Sheila recently took a Bronze at the Senior Nationals making this a double in only four months.

This success was followed by Robert Dawe who took a well deserved Bronze medal in the Men’s Kyu Grade 40 years & over, Robert recently returned to judo and surprised us all with an outstanding performance against over whelming odds.

Lee Summers deserves a particular mention for his outstanding performance against some very talented Judoka, who just missed out on a medal, as a result of having to with draw do to receiving a serious injury.

Not forgetting the others who represented the two clubs, Diane Clulow, Russ Clulow, Andy Knapp, and Ken Evans, for many this was there first competition, I was very proud of their performance and to be their Coach.

I would also like to thank club member Dr Nick Foster for his assistance & medical support given on the day.
